Project Description

Description: Creating a free form shape and then making something out of it.  Used Delcalomania, and Automatism ideas.  Drop paint on cardboard, put paper over and smoosh.  Then work with the shape that is made.  For the collage part used rice, pasta, q-tips, toothpicks, etc. to add to paintings on cardboard.  Use fantasy or dreams, you can put unlikely objects or create an impossible situation.

Materials: cardboard, paint, toothpicks, q-tips, rice, pasta etc.

Presentation Content

Talked about the surrealist movement and Andre Breton, the climate of the world, WW1, psychology, etc.  Painting dreams and fantasies, the subconscious.  Showed many paintings, Dali’s “Bust of a woman in costume” that it is also two.

Comments

It is interesting, that by 2nd grade they have a hard time with “automatism”, working with free form shapes and making something of it.  Not being in control of what they were drawing initially presented a problem and therefore made this a valuable lesson.  Forced them to loosen up.
